SCMP interviews Doufu Mafia

I was recently invited by South China Morning Post’s journalist Irene Liu to a delicious private kitchen lunch at Veggie Palace.

SCMP is the leading English language newspaper in Hong Kong and Irene wanted to tap my insights into the vegetarian cuisines and trends in the city.

In case you missed the coverage, here’s what she wrote:

“One chronicler of the latest in vegetarian food trends is Adaline Lau, a journalist who started the “Doufu Mafia” vegetarian food blog in 2008 as a hobby. “When I initially started a few years ago, I noticed mainstream food bloggers tended to be biased in their reviews about vegetarian food as they typically compared it to meat, which does not do justice to vegetarian cuisines and vegetarians,” she says…”SCMP

Get your tea fix at Lok Cha

oolong tea

This canton-style teahouse located in Hong Kong Park is said to serve more than a hundred different types of tea from Flower tea, Black tea to Green tea from Anxi, Taiwan and Guangdong.

As me and my friend are not tea connoisseurs (I came for the vegetarian dim sum actually) so we settled for Rose with Pu’er and Osmanthus Phoenix Oolong.

Nerd alert @ Bookworm

shepardess pie

I finally visit Bookworm Cafe while chilling at Lamma Island over the Easter break.

As a vegetarian, I don’t usually get to eat Shepard’s pie so I jumped at the opportunity to try the shepardess pie from Bookworm.

Instead of minced meat, the bottom layer is made of lentils and I like that it complements with the otherwise bland potato mash on top.

30 reasons to go vegetarian

Paul McCartney says, “If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That’s the single most important thing you can do. It’s staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.”

If you’re looking for compelling reasons to go meatless, watch this video from PETA which gives you 30 reasons why you should go veg.

Some of these resonate with me:

  • Because the grain used to feed animals could be used to feed hungry people.
  • Because no animal deserves to die for your taste buds.
  • Because you can’t eat meat and call yourself an environmentalist.
  • Because when animals feel pain, they scream, too.
  • Because commerce is no excuse for murder.

“In fact, if one person is unkind to an animal it is considered to be cruelty, but where a lot of people are unkind to animals, especially in the name of commerce, the cruelty is condoned and, once large sums of money are at stake, will be defended to the last by otherwise intelligent people. ” – Ruth Harrison, author of Animal Machines

Power lunch @ Red Restaurant

When I first saw the lunch set menu at Red restaurant in Soho, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of vegetarian options. However, when the waiter found out about my dietary restrictions, he quickly returned with a vegan menu.

Now, that’s a restaurant that is talking to me…

First, the appetizer:

artichoke heart with avocado cherry tomato salad

The starter has a long name, actually more like a very detailed description – Artichoke hearts with avocado, cherry tomato salad and honey mustard dressing.

The cherry tomatoes tastes refreshing and it goes well with the creamy avocado that is topped with rocket leaves.

Next up, the main course is served – giant eggplant with ratatouille.

Eggplant is an acquired taste but I’ve grown to love it now and what I like about this vegetable is that it can be cooked in many different ways.

While the tasty ones are usually deep fried, this ‘giant eggplant’ looks very healthy and tastes succulent. Fortunately, it is paired with ratatouille which goes well with the otherwise plain eggplant.

Do not be deceived that this eggplant filled with tomatoes and red peppers is insufficient, after finishing every bit of the vegetables, I felt really full.

I didn’t have enough space for dessert but Belle’s apple crumble and vanilla ice cream looked really tempting….yummy!

Located right below Pure Fitness along the escalators to Soho, Red allows you to people watch the busy lunch crowd while you savour your meal and catch up with friends.

Salad Buffet @ JW Marriott

Salads can be eaten as a meal on its own and it’s becoming popular to create your own salads by choosing the ingredients you like than be forced to choose from the limited salad varieties i.e. ceasar salad.

If you like to pamper yourself with a good salad meal, you could go to JW Marriott for its salad lunch buffet. The hotel also offers noodle and dessert buffet and if you are feeling famished, you could always opt for all three.
I like the experience of having control over what I eat from choosing and seeing how it’s made. Once you are settled and have your seat, proceed to the salad bar and grab a bowl – it’s huge (as big as your face and deep too) then pick the ingredients you like, some ingredients I love include kidney beans, spinach leaves, corn, chick peas, sun-dried tomatoes and parmesan cheese.
When your bowl is reasonably filled with all the ingredients you like, you surrender it to the ‘tosser’ who will ask you which salad dressing you want (I like to choose at least 2 different dressing) before pouring it into a metal bowl and mixing your creation into a delicious salad feast.
Viola! You can now dig into your salad creation. I love gorging into my giant bowl of salad.

Simply Life

It’s Sunday and you want to chill out somewhere for brunch. Running out of ideas?

Head to Festival Walk @ Kowloon Bay and check out the brunch menus at Simply Life Bakery Cafe.

I ordered a brunch set that includes mushroom soup and egg florentine. The portion is relatively big but not too much that you can’t finish when you are combining two meals.

The food is fresh and tasty but the only gripe I have is that it gets crowded quickly. Meaning you need to get there before 1230pm so you don’t have to wait long to get a seat. But you can’t really hang around as a long queue usually form outside quickly and not nice if you’re hogging your seats.

My strategy is to eat slowly and enjoy every bite of my food. And that’s what I call – Simply Life.

Buddha Hut

If you want a vegetarian version of the likes of local fast food chains such as Fairwood or Cafe De Coral, there’s just one such restaurant located near Kowloon Bay MTR station called Buddha Hut.

I decided to make my way there one afternoon and took my friend, Jessie along. We ordered cold buckwheat noodles sprinkled with sesame seeds on top and gravy that comes separately, when added gives the dish a refreshing taste.
The chicken satay dipped in peanut sauce is not too spicy yet rich enough to go well with the tangy texture of the veggie meat.
My all time favourite is the laksa but I reckon it would have tasted more ‘authentic’ if served with thick vermicelli instead.

This is definitely a good place to get delicious vegetarian food at reasonable prices.

For vegetarians who are put off by the veggie-unfriendly menus at the usual fast food restaurants, Buddha Hut is like an oasis where your challenge is to have such a wide variety of dishes from Chinese to Western cusines to choose from.

After a bit of shopping, I couldn’t stop myself from returning to grab a mushroom pie for a snack before heading home.

Paramita Vegetarian

Paramita vegetarian restaurant offers fushion food that looks and taste a little too much like real meat and is definitely for the more adventourous food lover. Some carnivores don’t understand why vegetarians want to eat veggie meats but these are designed to lure new converts who have decided to go vegetarian for merciful reasons yet still crave for ‘meat’ without having to kill animals.

For starters, the cold dish offers a selection of sashimi, japanese green salad and snail meat. I’m not really a big fan of veggie snail meat because I find the texture kind of rubbery but love the sashimi, which I usually dip with wasabi and soy sauce.
After the starters, the main courses includes the duckmeat and lotus hotpot. I like hotpots that usually comes with lots of gravy but this dish is relatively dry as if it’s been stir-fried. The lotus root is fresh and crunchy while the duck meat tastes good without tasting fake.
Next comes the beef tomato rice that looks like the typical “char chang teng” dish and it’s tasty despite being overload with tomatoes and tomato sauce that usually make it too sour.
The prawn in curry sauce goes well with rice, not your typical Southeast Asian rich and spicy curry but good enough to make you want more.

We ended dinner with a plate of kueh-kuehs – local desserts.

There are 2 Paramita restaurants – one located in the hustle and bustle of Tsim Sha Tsui on Haiphong Rd and the other in Victoria Tower shopping mall on Canton Rd.

Lafuma Cafe

A cafe named after its sports brand. Lafuma Cafe positions itself as offering traditional alpine food from France.

When you enter the premises on the 3rd floor, the cafe transports you to a wooden cottage lodge where the walls are filled with pictures of famous mountain climbers. It gives a cozy feeling and makes you forget you just trudged out from the hustle and bustle of Mongkok.

There are many different types of cheese fondues available and we ended up with the tomato cheese. I love dipping the potatoes into the fondue although bread tasted just as good.

Yvonne kept complaining that the fondue tasted too strong of wine but I thought it’s alright. And thank goodness the japanese curry eggplant baked rice was so yummy that even Yvonne was won over!

It’s a pity the service wasn’t exactly excellent as the waitress misunderstood me a couple of times and kept giving me cold drinks even after I requested for warm ones.

I’ll still want to go back again to try its other dishes particularly the risottos.
