Cart Noodles

Since Cart noodles or 车仔面 has the create your own noodles concept, it’s seldom you end up with food you don’t like.

However, I was being a little adventourous and ticked the vegetarian curry squid which I didn’t end up liking its rubbery texture.

On the return visit, I ordered the mini sausage with cheese again. You could taste the cheese when you bite into it but it’s not too much to ooze out of your mouth.

I wanted to try the tom yum flavour for the soup base but I got satay flavour again. It’s good but would have loved to try different soup bases. Next time…

Special thanks to Serain who recommended me to this vegetarian cart noodles at Tsim Sha Tsui.

Cart noodles came about in the 1950s in Hong Kong as street vendors operate on roadsites and in low-income districts of public housing estates via carts. It has since become a cultural icon.

Burger Republic

There’s just so many burger restaurants in Hong Kong, you are not short of choice! But I’m still hunting for that perfect veggie burger in town! I know meat eaters are going to roll their eyes but the good thing about hunting for veggie burgers is you become very focused on tracking down the only option available at the various burger restaurants. David recommended me to try Burger Republic and I decided to check it out one evening. I ordered Veggie Galore plus egg and a set meal that comes with chips and coke. It was good, definitely better than Fat Burger and a little bit better than Shake ‘em Buns but on par with Gourmet Burger Union. I’m comparing only the veggie options, of course and can’t speak for the rest. As for the sides, the chips is thick and fresh but I didn’t manage to finish the generous portion. Located on Gough Street, it’s a cozy restaurant and I would definitely visit again.

Dinner @ Al Dente

There are 3 Al Dente restaurants in Hong Kong. I’ve tried it during lunch but enjoyed my experience better during dinner when I get to choose from the menu. This is my first time at the Al Dente at Sun Hung Kai, which is more spacious than the one I usually frequent on Jaffe Street in Wanchai. This restaurant is dog-friendly too so Pamela and Charlotte brought Bailey along to have dinner with me. The mozarella sticks taste good as it was not too over-fried and I like to eat it with plum sauce that gives it that added touch. We had 2 sticks each so we didn’t have the chance to get too sick with an overdose of cheese.
The portabello mushrooms topped with cottage cheese and tomatoes was yummy too. I initially thought it would come with the shrooms only but it turned out there were other toppings and it helped that the shrooms were juicy and succulent.
The mixed vegetable pasta is generous with its ingredients such as capsicum and zuchinni. It was a little dry but nice when you sprinkle it with tobasco.
We had Tiramisu for dessert and it sure perks me up! The three of us were attacking the tiramisu and finished it very quickly. All in all, a most enjoyable and relaxing dinner.

Cupcake Indulgence

I love hanging out @ Elements on weekends since it’s just 10 minutes walk from home. And whenever I pass by Petits by Deschamps, I can’t help to check out its wide array of cupcakes. Many flavours to choose from – chocolate, bailey’s, lemon and tiramisu. But my all time favourite is the cheesecake flavoured cupcake. The cream cheese on top is decadent, you can’t help digging in for more. Size is just right – not too little that makes you crave for more nor is it too much that makes you want to puke. Definitely worth a stop if you head to Elements shopping mall level 2, shop 2004 – Kowloon station.

Dinner @ Spunky Spasso

It was Sunday and we were hanging out at Harbour City again. After shopping at Muji, we decided to give Spasso, a nifty Italian restaurant with a beautiful seaview atop the shopping mall a try. Our starter was the tempura egg, rocket lettuce and sundried tomato salad. As it was International Women’s Day, 8th March, we were each given a bouquet of dried flowers. Nice!
The pizza was huge but yummy as it came out hot from the oven. As you can see, it’s filled with lots of ingredients, the base is not too thick and when you splash it with hints of tabasco, tastes good indeed!
The pumpkin penne in creme sauce was delicious. I’m usually quite weary of creme sauce pasta as it could sometimes get too rich and you feel sick of it after just a few mouthfuls. This one is just right. The ambience at the terrace was good, even though it was a bit chilly, it was nice to chill out and have dinner on a Sunday evening al fresco style.

Dinner buffet @ W Hotel

Grabbed an assortment of veggies for appetizers – beetroot, tomatoes, roasted potatoes and salad plus crackers and different types of cheese.
The dessert section caught my attention most. This is a mini oven that contains apple crumble and creme brulee in traditional chinese cups.
A wide angle view of the dessert selection. Instead of serving the usual chocolate fondue, W Hotel serves up strawberry fondue.
I tried to capture the rest of the desserts available – too many to try! Wish I could eat them all!
I couldn’t take my eyes off the dessert selection all evening and ended up with this plate. The cherry topped jelly like dessert (not sure the proper name for it) has alcohol inside, which tastes not bad. Creme brulee didn’t disappoint and I loved the tiramisu the best! The ambience at W Hotel was awesome although my back was facing the harbourfront. It was an evening well-spent at the W.

Lunch @ JW Marriott

You usually get salad or soup for appetizers and the fruit platter usually comes last but in this case, my starter at JW Marriott is a plate of fruits – watermelon and honey dew with pine nuts and basil splashed in olive oil.
The main course is a plate of penne with tomato sauce and parmesan cheese. Not bad.
Dessert is the best! A mango tart, berries and rasperry sorbet. Yummy!

Lunch after charity walk in Tai Po

This is the black pepper fish dish that has a strong beancurd taste. I’ve eaten many different types of mock fish and this is by far I would say the more ‘vegetable-like’ one compared to the ones I always eat. The portion is big and comes with a few stalks of kai lan and light gravy sauce. Hong Kong people don’t like to season their food too strongly. The dish you see below is the beef patty and potato rice. The patty has a strong mushroom base unlike the more ‘advanced’ kind which contains more soy protein. I didn’t take down the name of this restaurant but it’s in the busy part of Tai Po near McDonald’s. My first trip to Tai Po in New Territories after a 5km charity walk. It was great to finally tuck into lunch after a refreshing walk by the river.

Feast @ Causeway Bay

For the Lunar New Year, I was invited to attend 千人宴, which is loosely translated as “Feast for a Thousand” at a restaurant with a sea view in Causeway Bay. However, I was not seated near the windows, so I missed out on the spectacular seaview. The dinner was like a typical full-course meal at a Chinese restaurant for important occasions such as at a wedding. This is interesting because it’s got a stage that offers entertainment catering to a very local and matured crowd as some of the guests were from a senior home. There were stage singers and performances as well as lucky draw.
I’ve highlighted some of the dishes in this entry there are two plates of cold dishes. I like the beancurd skin in the first picture but the mayonnaise in the second picture was too creamy for my liking. I did enjoy the deep fried veggie cuttlefish ball though.
Broccoli is my all time favourite vegetable and I like the beancurd roll with mushroom especially since the skin is tender as it has been soaked in gravy.
This picture has been posed to make the dish look appetizing. And the melon did taste good with the bok choy at the sides. I reckon it’s a very cantonese dish as it does not contain strong spices or seasoning.
We were served the sweets towards the end of the feast. I like both the “kueh kueh” which is very popular locally. It’s only when I come to Hong Kong that I’ve acquired the taste to enjoy osmanthus ‘cake’ with wolfberry seeds. I like the hint of the flower and the refreshing and cooling effect of the ‘cake’. The other flavour is coconut and red bean. We rounded off the feast with the papaya and white fungus dessert! It was quite a feast indeed!

Lunch @ The Mistral

I was invited to lunch at The Mistral, an Italian restaurant at the Intercontinental Grand Standford Hotel a second time and it never fail to disappoint. I started with the antipasto buffet and had my favourite selections of grilled vegetables, fresh tomatoes and cheese. For the main course, I tried the asparagus rissotto. Even though there wasn’t much ingredients in the rissotto, the thick creamy sauce was refreshing and delicious. There was a hint of asparagus in the sauce but it wasn’t too overwhelming and I managed to finish almost the entire plate without feeling that the cream sauce was too heavy for me. Of course, I didn’t miss out on the dessert buffet and had my favourite lavender panna cotta. I love the subtle taste of lavender and it went well to finish off the whole meal. All in all, I had a tasty lunch at The Mistral and was glad to be introduced to the chef and received special attention from the manager. Apparently the ingredients are all imported from Italy. Thanks Tina for inviting us!
