Bali, Ubud Eats: Soma

Bali’s Ubud is like the veggie mecca of Indonesia. Here recently for a 3 day raw food program, Kate and Becky brought me to a few eateries that offer delicious vegan/veggie and raw friendly food.

Soma

Live pad thai

Live pad thai

This entree contains jicama, daikon and carrot noodles, chopped cashews, coriander, thai basil, mint, sprouts and kaffir lime. Sauce is addictive!

Ying Vegetarian – Modern Veggie Selection

Pleasantly surprised to be invited by Razlan to Ying Vegetarian, who already wrote a fantastic post about this restaurant. Afterall, how can I possibly reject my carnivorous friends that are so enthusiastic to go meatless with me? Here goes:

Veggie Tapas at Enoteca Soho

Stuffed Portobello

Stuffed Portobello

Imagine biting into this giant portobello mushroom filled with creamy feta cheese, marinated red peppers and sun-dried tomatoes. I actually savored some at Enoteca on Elgin, Soho with colleagues one afternoon. Sooo delicious I could finish it all by myself. Please note this restaurant is not 100% vegetarian but offers a good selection of meatless tapas, perfect when hanging out with your carnivorous friends.

Zen Palate, Red Bamboo & Soma – New York Eats

Featuring 2 veggie restaurants in New York City and one with Korean veggie options.

Red Bamboo

Butterfly Soy Chops

Butterfly Soy Chops

First encounter with veggie pork chops, basically it’s lightly breaded soy pork chops served with apple-raisin sauce and sauteed collard greens including veggie ham and sweet corn mashed potatoes. Love the combo although the soy chops were a little dry and massive portion too.

Recommended by my colleague Kate, Red Bamboo serves delicious vegetarian meat dishes. Click more to find out about their Buffalo Wings and Almond Coconut Chicken nuggets.

More New York Eats: Cafe Blossom, Terri Organic & Alfanoose

If you look hard enough, there are many vegetarian restaurants or vegetarian friendly places in Manhattan. Here’s a few I visited and liked:

1. Cafe Blossom

Root vegetables pastry wrap

Root vegetable phyllo pastry

I’m a fan of pastry wraps and this is filled with lots of root veggies – carrots, peas, turnips, sweet potato and rutabaga. Gives a rich and sourish but tasty flavor when dipped in white wine mustard cream sauce.

New York Eats: Candle 79

Before I even arrive in New York, my friend Wendy has been raving about this gourmet vegan restaurant – Candle 79. And sure enough, it didn’t disappoint. Here’s what we had the day I hoped off the plane:

chickpea cake and coconut curry

chickpea cake

The red pepper coconut curry gives a spicy kick to this Moroccan spiced chickpea cake and goes well with the hint of ginger mango chutney and toasted almonds on top and filled myself silly with lots of healthy sauteed greens.  Curious to know what other mouth-watering dishes I had? Click more.

VeganBurg: Meatless Organic Fast Food

This organic, vegan fast food restaurant is 10 minutes walk from Paya Lebar MRT but it’s worth the trip – especially if you’re a burger lover. And so many flavors to choose from – Hawaiian Pineapple, Smoky BBQ, Chargrilled Satay and Tangy Tartar.

Vegan Burg
Vegan Fast Food That’s Not Junk
Burger

I settled for the Cracked Pepper Mayo Burger served in their signature organic ciabatta bread filled with sunflower, pumpkin seeds and walnuts in rich, creamy mayonnaise. The patty was ok and for the price I had to fork out should have been thicker.

Quite a novel way of serving your burger meal in a camping tin, matches with the wooden benches and furniture in the restaurant. Seaweed fries was delicious although the beetroot carrot juice seems diluted.

The lady taking my orders at the counter wasn’t very helpful or friendly, would have been nice if they could improve their customer service.

But I’ll give VeganBurg a chance and try other flavors next time I’m back.
